THE VILLAGE OF BANI OFAIR
There are around 50 farming families living in Bani Ofair, Dhamar. The land is very rugged but lush. The lack of roads and infrastructure mean that the area is remote and isolated. However, this is not enough to deter the farming families who live here. Coffee is considered a great source of pride and should not be given up on. The people here drink coffee every morning for breakfast. To them, a sign of a good cup of coffee is when it can satisfy you completely. During the harvest season, the farmers meet to sit and drink each other’s coffees. They cup and assess the coffee quality creating a competitive edge to farming in Bani Ofair, encouraging the farmers to produce even better coffee.
THE REGION OF ANS
Ans is a region within the governorate of Dhamar. Coffee farming is widespread in the region and many families rely on it completely financially. There are around 60 farming families here growing coffee, corn, potatoes and qat. This region has been growing and cultivating various types of crops for over 7,000 years. There is a shortage of water in the region which impacts farmers and their families. It is often the women and children who must source the clean water, either bringing it back in barrels or using animals to help share the load.
THE GOVERNORATE OF DHAMAR
The Dhamar governorate is located in the west of Yemen, in between Sana’a and Taiz. The name Dhamar derives from one of the kings of Saba’ and Dhu-Raydan, Dhamar Ali Yahbur II, which translates to “Owner of the Order”. Dhamar has been occupied by ancient civilizations since 6,000 BC and many archaeological and tourist sites can be found here. The Adrah Dam dates back to the Himyarite Kingdom and acts as a barrier between the mountains. Old engravings can be found in caves at Doran Anss, north of the mountain Al-Dameagh. The main industry in Dhamar is agriculture, making use of the diverse topography from vast plains, mountains and valleys. Farming families here grow coffee, corn, potatoes and qat. Dhamar is also known for its high-quality and exquisite tasting coffee. Ans, Bani Fadhl, Magrib Ans, Automa and Jabal Ash Sharq are the main regions for growing coffee, these regions provide the perfect climate for coffee farming one of the reasons for Dhamar’s high coffee yield.
