The Ureña Rojas family of Café Rivense del Chirripó pioneered Costa Rica’s first micro-mill in the Upper Buenavista Catchment in the early 2000s, breaking away from the traditional mega-mill model. This gave them greater control over quality and allowed experimentation to unlock new flavors.
Located in the remote Brunca region, the Chirripó micro-region benefits from high altitudes (1,300–2,000 masl), rich soils, biodiversity, and unique microclimates between Costa Rica’s highest mountains. Its specialty coffees have gained international recognition, including Café Rivense’s honey-processed Caturra, which placed 5th in the 2019 Cup of Excellence.
